Hey! SEO for Small Business Owners, Take a Look

seo-for-small-businessSEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization, should be a term known and understood by every small business owner. SEO helps a business be found when a potential client does a search on a search engine. By optimizing its web content for search engines, a company can improve its relevance online, land more clients, and find growth.

Unfortunately, many large companies have been focused on SEO for years. This can make it hard for a smaller company like ours to rank our business for lockout tagout then it is for say, Masterlock who’s been in the safety business which also includes lockout tagout ande other services in the safety arena.  This makes it extremly hard to gain traction in this space. Ultimately, the goal is to be one of the top results (or at least on the first page of results) when a prospective client searches for specific keywords or phrases which relate to your business. But if the bigger players in the industry have already cornered that market, how does a small business break in?

These days, search engines have gotten much smarter than they once were. You can’t simply stuff keywords on a website and see it hit the top of the results. Similarly, old content will not keep top rankings for long. This is where small business owners can make a dent – the content released by the small business today has an equal chance of being tomorrow’s top results as the content released by a larger company.

But the trick is still in how to cultivate those top results. Relevant, readable content will win with these search engines. As will a strong social media presence. So by writing and creating good, quality content, either on social media directly, through a blog, or simply on the website, a company will increase its rankings. Then, by creating a strong social media presence across multiple social media sites, growing followers in those places, and then ultimately pointing back to the web content on the main site, many small businesses manage to capture the top few spots of a selected term.

SEO used to be as simple as stuffing keywords in a header or on a website. Today, it is more dynamic and complex, with search engines rewarding websites with good content. By understanding the rules of search engines, it can be easier to find your business at the top of the search results. Start by creating good content, then create a strong social media presence. By doing this, even the smallest businesses can compete with the largest.
